11 Nov Peppermint Oil for Headaches
Having a headache pop up during your day can be a significant inconvenience. It can lower your focus, dampen your mood, and make small ordinary tasks much more difficult. The most common headache amongst people is considered a tension headache. Regardless of the type, they’re hard to deal with, and if you’re anything like me, you’d rather not pop a pill every time you feel one coming on. The good news, other solutions may help you avoid grabbing that bottle of your preferred pills.
Have you ever considered using peppermint oil for headaches?
Peppermint Oil Inhalers
My go-to for helping with headaches is my Grandpa’s Good Earth Aromatherapy Inhaler. I have my inhaler in my pocket all the time, it’s become inseparable from my keys. I keep it on me at all times because I use it regularly throughout the day to boost my energy and increase my focus. It’s an added plus that I can reach for my inhaler when I feel a headache creeping in.
When the headache rears its ugly head, I inhale deeply on my inhaler around 2-3 seconds for each nostril. As you begin to use your inhaler, you’ll develop a system that works for you regarding the inhale’s timing.
The main reason peppermint oil works for headaches comes from the menthol that’s in the oil. The menthol works to clear your nasal passages, in turn helping you get more oxygen. When the body has more oxygen, the body begins to release tension build-up that could be causing the headache.
Peppermint Oil Roll-Ons
Another way to use peppermint oil for headaches revolves around rubbing it onto your skin. With that said it’s important to note that peppermint oil should be diluted before being applied to the skin; otherwise, you may experience some burning.
One of the easiest ways to use peppermint oil to alleviate headaches is by using a pre-diluted roll-on. Many of our customers use our roll-ons for just that purpose. When diluted peppermint oil is added to the skin, it can reduce tension and inflammation, removing the cause of certain headaches.
The most common way to use peppermint oil for this purpose is by rolling it on your temples, the back of your neck, or right below the jawline.
Peppermint Oil and Your Mask
2020 has presented problems across the world, one of the biggest surrounds the Covid-19 virus that’s been spreading. Many of us have chosen to wear masks as a preventative measure to protect ourselves and our families. This step can be seen as little more than an inconvenience when running into the gas station or grocery store. But, it can be challenging to deal with if you find yourself needing to wear one for extended periods of time.
We have many customers that work in different essential roles where they’re required to wear masks for 8-hour shifts. Many of whom have spoken on the headaches they’re getting and the scent of continual mask-wearing.
One of the co-founders here at Grandpa’s Good Earth works in a dental office, where it’s essential for them to take safety precautions for their patients. Before the need for masks arose, she hardly ever had headaches pop up. But, since the requirement has been in place, she’s found them happening frequently.
Since they began occurring, she started using a roll-on to apply peppermint oil to the mask. What she’s found as she works is that the peppermint oil gives off a pleasant scent while also keeping her airways clear. She’ll generally roll a line of the peppermint oil/fractionated coconut oil mixture across the middle of her mask from left to right before she begins her day. As the day goes along, she’ll reapply as needed. Since starting this practice she’s realized it’s much easier for her to make it through the day. She’s also noticed a dramatic decrease in the frequency and strength of any headaches that may arise.
If you find yourself wearing a mask for long periods of time, you may want to consider applying peppermint oil to your mask. As always, when applying peppermint oil that may come in contact with your skin, you’ll want to dilute it first or pick up one of our pre-diluted Peppermint Oil Roll-ons.
